Some doctors have approved eyelashes transplant to help accident victims who completely lost their natural eyelashes after being exposed to a specific accident such as a fire, and this eyelashes operation was first performed in Brazil in 1999. Nowadays, few surgeons around the world can perform it with high professionalism without any serious complications. Today, many women undergo natural eyelashes transplant for beauty-related reasons without realizing their harms.
Eyelashes transplantation surgery can only be performed on the upper eyelid due to the straight hair growth of the lower eyelid and the difficulty of trimming and curling it. Usually, hair is removed from the back of the head, then the hair is split into individual follicles in order to facilitate implantation into the upper eyelid using a curved needle. The patient is usually subjected to eye anesthesia only during this delicate surgery.
A normal eyelid contains about 100 to 150 eyelashes in each eye. Approximately 25 to 60 new eyelashes can be implanted into each eyelid, and the transplant procedure is performed within 2 or 3 hours. New eyelashes begin to grow after about 6 months in most cases, until they reach their full length.
Oculoplastic surgeons warn of eyelashes transplant operations, which may lead to many complications such as misdirection of eyelashes that affect the patients’ vision. In addition, the transplanted hair does not stop growing and must be cut and trimmed, which happens due to the rate of hair growth taken from the back of the head, as it is hair that continues to grow, unlike eyelashes that stop growing when they reach a certain length.
Surgeons believe that conducting such a procedure may be justified only in cases of severe chemical burns or reconstructive surgery, because of what the eyelashes operations leave of scars that are sometimes hard to avoid.
Doctors generally do not recommend eyelashes transplantation for cosmetic purposes, especially if the person performing the implantation does not have sufficient skill and professionalism.
